Cead Mile Failte!
(a hundred thousand Welcomes)
Welcome to almost Spring at the Jersey Shore in Neptune City :) Sparrows Nest Flower Shop Sparrows Nest Flower Shop – Florists NJ - Neptune City NJ Florist is located in what us locals call The Irish Riviera. Surrounded by Belmar, Spring Lake and Neptune City, there is a strong Irish population & we love to show our Irish Pride. The Belmar St. Patrick's Day Parade on the first Sunday in March kicks off a whole month of celebrating. Following Sunday Asbury Park hosted theirs. At the Sparrows Nest Florist, we are located 4 blocks away from one of the most famous Irish Bars at the Jersey Shore, Kellys Tavern in Neptune City. We are all decked out in green. From green carnations to Bells of Ireland, we have lots of beautiful shades of green. Stop in our shop and pick up one of our potato arrangements...a hollowed out potato with green carnations & other blooms, most certainly a conversation piece. They are a hit!! We have many beautiful arrangements. We have all kinds of décor also. Wreaths, signs, pins, Shamrock plants, flags. Tuesday is St. Patrick"s Day, Why not send some Luck of the Irish florally? We deliver!
~May the road rise up to meet you, may the wind be at your back, may the rain fall softly on your fields and may God hold you in the palm of his hand~

We eagerly await Spring & the kick off is.....
Hello PeePs!,
Come into the Sparrows Nest Flower Shop in Neptune City and you will feel like you are in an Irish Flower Shop. Beautiful Colors, Spring Tulips and the colors of Ireland. Even though the temperatures are not co-operating, it is spring in the shop. www.sparrowsnestflorist.com
We are all eagerly awaiting for Spring. We've had enough of Winter! One of the kick offs to Spring is the Belmar St. Patrick's Day Parade which is this Sunday. Mother Nature will be providing a precipitation free day but you will need to bundle up, it's going to be nippy. Once again the Parade committee asked us to create some centerpieces for their last fundraising dinner.
The next kick off to Spring is the Philadelphia Flower Show, which starts this weekend. Our shop will be closed on Wed. We are attending and can not wait to be florally stimulated ;) Another rite of Spring. I've been attending this for, uh..the last 27yrs...whoa!
The next kick off is the Asbury Park St. Patrick's Day Parade on Sun. March 8th. The 2nd year for this parade. We heard thru the grapevine this was a great little parade so... This florist will be attending~
We start celebrating Spring before the actual date, but why not?
We have had enough of Winter! We want to "let it go"!
Go forth and Carpe your Diem :)

Whew! It's over!
Hello Blogger PeePs!
Valentine's Day is behind this florist...yay! One of the most stressful holidays ever! Hoping to sell the amount of product purchased & the thrill of unstable weather has once again caused many a gray hair that only my stylist will see ;) Friday the 13th & Sat. Valentine's Day was unbelievable! The foot traffic in the shop was so heavy! Being a one woman flower shop..there was only so much I could do so I concentrated on the men that actually made a point to come TO the shop. We had a line!! They were my focus. You are here, I am giving you my best! The weather was brutally frigid. All flowers that left the shop were triple wrapped with paper to protect the blooms from windchill. The men appreciated a little lesson about the temps and blooms. On Friday it was so cold & wind chills so bad, I placed a rose outside the door & within 5min. it was frozen. I displayed the 5min. frozen rose so they could see to not even leave their flowers in the car.
Our deliveries on Valentine's Day were a task also! Recipients had to be home to receive our flowers. It was a Saturday, so that made it even more difficult. But my 2 drivers, the professionals they are were 100%, they got it done! We delivered 7 at a time so the vehicles did not get too cold when we were loading.
So after many hours worked. This florist was in desperate need of rest and as you can see..someone missed me. He has been a permanent fixture on my lap :)
But today I head back to the shop, Valentines Day was a success and behind me now, Whew! And now our Modus Operandi is BRING ON SPRING!!! Bring on the St. Patrick's Day Parades in Belmar and Asbury Park! Bring on Green Carnations! Bring on the TULIPS! Bring on Lent! Bring on Easter!! We are ready for just a little warmth! Mother Nature send us a taste of Spring!! Here on the Jersey shore we are more than ready!!
~~Carpe diem!~~~

A flower shop and a door lock in the midst of winter
There was a time when I actually liked all of the four seasons, but now since I own a small business, there is one season I do not get along with~ Winter...and it's not really the cold so much as the wind. My flower shop and I claim to be true, is on the windiest corner in Monmouth County. It could be the way my door is facing, (Northwest and caddy-corner) or it's my proximity to the Shark River. That wind in the winter shakes the door of my store HARD! Getting flowers out the door & into the FlowerJeep is a task. I have actually had stems snap off and the little cards flying down the highway. I warn my customers when they purchase an arrangement to hold it close to their body. If it is really windy out there I will run it out to their car myself. I have to wrap up arrangements to protect them from the wind and cold and the recipient must be home to accept the flowers. No one wants a frozen arrangement (although some of the wire services, proflowers,1-800. etc. think that's acceptable)...
...But let me get back to the door..This building that is the home of the Sparrows Nest was probably built somewhere in the early 50's, the door and the doorlock are proof of it. Never been changed, brass & cast iron.
So one bitter, windy, frigid February evening, about to head home, I go to lock the door...the deadbolt won't budge.I could not lock the door! For almost 14 years I have been locking and unlocking the door with never an issue. So after about a half hour, call my husband to come take a look at it, he is very mechanically inclined but he couldn't to get it to work either. So at 6 pm I call a locksmith. He takes it apart, which by the way, while he's working on it, the door is open. It's 18* and very windy. The lock itself could not be replaced due to the it and door being such an antique and thick & those parts aren't made anymore. There was more to this malfunction than adding graphite or wd-40, the deadbolt was bent. The locksmith was afraid to try to bend it back in fear it would be completely broken. My husband did 2 quick hits with a hammer and straightened it out...thank goodness!! I had visions of me sleeping on the counter to protect the shop. They eventually got it put back together..$220 later. We finally left the shop at 8:30 cold & frozen and hungry.
I will tell you one thing, on a February evening when I am ready to go home and that lock works I will always be grateful. (I will always be grateful everyday)
So I am not friends with winter. I will plod thru it. My soul has a never ending summer within it...just wish it kept me warmer that night.
So my blogpeeps, in closing, I hope your locks turn smoothly and you are warm and cozy.
Carpe diem friends!
(I am thinking of doing a blog every week. Are you in? Do you like it?)

Valentines day and be savy, use your local florist!
Valentine's Day is coming and you will hear all kinds of ads from proflowers, advertising low prices for dozens of roses. Don't fall for it. It is a consumer trap. They lure you in with an incredibly low price of $19.99 and by the time all is said and done there is a $53 shipping and handling fee added on, bringing your grand total to 72.99. Your gift will come in a box, left on your doorstep in freezing cold temps. The roses are short, the filler flower is sparse, hardly any greens, no bow, no warm fuzzy feeling :(
Teleflora and ftd are not any better. They advertise low prices also. They receive a phone order then try to find a florist to fill the order, in the meanwhile Teleflora or ftd takes a considerable chunk of your money then pass a lower amount to the filling florist. The filling florist will only receive about 70% or less of the amount of the order. Florists are getting out of the wire services, they cannot afford to work with these wire services. Florists go out of business with these services. Plus we want to give you the full amount of your order!
Sure...you may think it's so easy and sounds great, read some of the comments on their facebook pages of how it didn't look like the photo or it was never delivered...Have you ever spent $19.99 on something then to have over a $50 fee added to it? I didn't think so.
When you call your local brick & mortar florist, you will be speaking to someone who is actually IN THE FLOWER SHOP, not someone sitting behind a computer screen in some land far away from where your delivery needs to go. We have planned months in advance for this day. We have purchased the finest quality flowers we can find. It is our name going out on our arrangements and we want to WOW the recipient. Word of mouth is our way of advertising. We can't compete with TV and radio ads or afford them. I guess that's where that extra $50 is going ;)
Prices do go up on Valentines Day. Why? Supply and demand. Rose growers months in advance pinch back their rose crops to get them ready for mid February, which results in lost production and income for the grower so prices go up with the next crop. To harvest this crop, the grower will need more laborers. The cost to transport the harvested roses goes up. The wholesaler who receives the flowers has to have extra help on hand due to the influx of product.
By the time the flowers arrive at the flower shop, we need to have extra hands to process the flowers. We strip them (remove the thorns, it's a great arm & shoulder workout) then into specially prepared solution for the roses to drink. Then each one gets cleaned up. After that we can begin to create.
EVERY FLOWER passes through the florist's loving hand, making sure each one is perfect for purchase. This is why you use a LOCAL FLORIST, this is a personal gift, you have called us to relay a message and we are going to deliver that message as beautifully as we can.
Call your Local Florist early to place your order..we love you for that!
Shop your local brick and mortar business...we love you more.

Needing that Spring color!
Happy New Year Sparrows Nest blogger readers!!
Christmas is over~ & it's January
The decorations are down.
The weather is horrible. Sub zero wind chills, freezing temperatures. You can't even go outside or want to.
So yesterday I did this arrangement and posted it on facebook https://www.facebook.com/www.sparrowsnestflowershop , The amount of likes and comments was astonishing! People are craving a glimpse of Spring. Tulips and Iris are a spring flower that we carry at the Sparrows Nest. We have so many customers that look forward to Tulip time :) It is so refreshing to see other colors besides red and white. Yellow makes you feel so good! This was a Get Well arrangement & it made a lot of people feel good on social media.
So if you are feeling the winter doldrums, put on your coat, gloves and hat & head over to our shop for some spring color. It will make you feel so good.
It is Vitamin C for the eyes & soul!!
Carpe Diem!
